At three minutes – twenty-six seconds, Tay Zonday’s new thumping, bumping techno/rap anthem “This Is You” is perfect. While listening to it, I felt as though the sun was shining and I could do anything. This song is a shot of adrenaline. The opening synthesized piano sets the tone of expectation. The song flows very nicely from verse to rap/pre-chorus, chorus, and back. Tay incorporates modern and primitive. There is actually hand clapping melded in there!

My favorite verse is:

I am here to rock

Don’t get in my way

I am here to rock the world and stay

Though the song and video together makes for a great marriage this song can definitely stand alone. The cinematography is superb with great attention to detail. Water droplets almost seem three dimensional and light in some scenes reflect back as surreal prisms of sparkle. The outdoor scenes are infused with vitality. “Running From The Concrete” by Tay Zonday

I’ll start with the “Running From The Concrete” video itself. A Tay Zonday video is usually him singing and playing his keyboard. At other times it’s a full blown music video like this one. To me RFTC has all of the quintessential elements of an 80′s music video. You have your guy(s), danceable song, girl(s), strobe light effect, x-ray or cartoon effect, a series of physical/action shots. There is even rapping in this song and repeated scenes of concrete being broken with a sledgehammer. It seemed to embody the meaning of the song. He’s running from what the concrete represents, yet he must make constant contact with the concrete to try and distance himself from it. An unavoidable cycle. The relation between the running on concrete and it’s symbolic breaking is clear.

The song: One listener said that they sometimes like a Tay Zonday song better after each listening. I find that to be true at times also. Tay has elements of a distinct “sound” and a distinct “rap” in most of his work. He seems to move back and forth between songs that have hidden or obvious meaning to the purely danceable. Whatever deeper meaning this song may have, for those of us who are connoisseurs of the 80′s, you just can’t get past the awesome visuals of this video. As one commenter stated, “It has a sweet vintage sound yet modern”.

“Someone To Hold” by Tay Zonday

“Someone To Hold” is uplifting in spirit as well as truthfulness. I think Tay Zonday is a master at tapping into topics anyone can relate to. Someone To Hold “speaks”. A factory worker, a CEO, or a kid online can relate to this song. It is an amazing song. To me, the most powerful lines are:

“We’re lions of the pride

It makes us feel alive

We need to huddle at night

Everybody needs a friend by their side”

This encompasses all facets of human emotion and contact be it virtual or IRL (in real life).

“People just make me fly

(You can almost feel the words take soaring flight)

This is the universal song of connectivity.

O Holy Night is one of those traditional Christmas staple songs. When you mix “old time classic” with the rich vibrato baritone of Tay Zonday, you really get a great combination. A lot of listeners have compared his rendition as “operatic” in sound and I must agree. This man needs an opera house! He has something special in the way he’s not afraid to limit what song to sing. He brings a real strength and power to this karaoke. Tay Zonday has put the “Oh!” in O Holy Night. Bravo.

“Bubble of Awesome” by Tay Zonday

“Bubble of Awesome” is an empowerment song. It’s an affirmation anthem. Every line is a lyrical narrative of “I matter whether you think I do or not”. I have to wonder if it is coincidental that this was made in early November 2010 not long after a rash of teen suicides. It’s hard not to try to attribute meaning to a Tay Zonday song.

“Be your own big superhero. Rip off your shirt and be super-man-ly”.

“You people I’m hot, I’m blocking you out . . . . “

“Got my bubble of awesome, I’m gonna roll around town. If you got any drama then I’m a knock you right down.”

“I got my bubble of awesome. I’m gonna domi-dominate so just put on a bubble and you can roll with me.

Part of this song features UpWordsTv who also has a You Tube channel. He does some impressive rapping about being awesome. There is also a cameo by Apprats.

“Why” by Tay Zonday

This song is a promotional for Trivial Pursuit. Of course Tay Zonday has incorporated a lot of interesting “Why” question and answers in the lyrics. It seems like Zonday is using at least ten different instrumental sounds (the video inset pictures show this). The deep echoing fast rap is becoming his signature sound. Who doesn’t love the 80′s? Tay Zonday is a genre magician. You never know what he’s going to come out with next. “Why” is a very fun, happy, and danceable song. I can picture a “big hair” band when I listen. Retro is good. I’m all for happier, carefree, youthful MTV times.

Tay’s song, “Traffic Machine” has a good beat. I really love the song title. It practically tells the story itself. This song overall has an 80′s feel to me. He’s once again managed to cocoon a message among dance-able beats. The” traffic” being referenced seem to be ” internet traffic”. There is a story being told. Whether it’s observational or personal, only Tay Zonday knows.

This is definitely a dance floor song. I wish someone would come up with a dance step for it. Everything about this song is “jumping” from the tempo, the beat, the rap. I tried keeping up with the lyrics. Forget it. This song is for dancing. I don’t think anyone can lay down a “rap” as fast as Tay Zonday. Eminem . . . . who? My favorite part is:

Tay hits the ground running with “Christmas Star”. There are no sweet hymns, tinkling chimes, or angelic harps. He is the messenger bearing a Christmas gift wrapped in straight talk. First line: “So you think you’re touched by Jesus . . . Speaking tongues and having seizures”? Wow. This gets your attention right away. He quotes scripture and asks the hard questions about religion, tradition, politics, faith, consumerism, neighborliness, and the real meaning of Christmas. If you can get to the end of this song without having to look past the yuletide log stuck in your own eye . . . then he isn’t talking to you. “Christmas . . . . we need more Christ . . . . run to the mall and bask in his light”. . . The way he juxtaposes a traditional Christmas tune with being “in tuned” to issues of the day is brilliant. The last part of the song is punctuated with “Jesus is gonna be my rock star this Christmas”. A must listen to song any time of year. A song you won’t forget.
